Does Linking to An Expert Site with no link back hurt you?

I recently just linked my site to two other expert sites with PR of 5. Mine is also a PR of 5 in the specific category.

Neither of the other webmasters would link back to my site, so im my impression I'm going to remove them anyways.

But I read that if your content is linked to quality sites it can help you as well. My question is, is it more helpful to link to another site thats an expert, and not have them link back? Or is it better to just not link at all?

Competitors.

Are visitors to your site helped by a link to the other site? If it does, why remove it just because the other site failed to reciprocate?

However, I can't comment on the ranking implications. Hopefully someone else will know. I do not consider reciprocation or PR implications at all. The question is, if I send my visitors to this site, will they be glad I did?
