Using Sub Domains for US & UK visitors

I have a domain which has achieved some reasonable keyword rankings in Google although only a PR of 3. I want to display slightly different content to US and UK visitors. I will simply display the country flags at the top of the screen to allow visitors to select their country.

I have thought of using a sub domain for the US pages. I am using a database to provide the content for the site so this would be duplicated between the main and sub domain. The only difference between them would be the partners that I would promote. I would cross link the two sites only with flag links at the top of each page.

I have worked hard to get my page ranked and do not wish to destroy my PR especially in the run into Xmas.

What are the risks of using this approach and is there a more suitable alternative?
