Hi folks.

A client of mine had his web site on .net platform. He then switched it to asp. as a result his home pages extension changed from .aspx to .asp.

This had two consequences, one of which I was able to sort. It is the other that I need some help on.

First was that the new pages were not getting indexed in google. This conituned for a month & then I decided to put redirect on the .aspx page & other directories. As a result the fresh home page got indexed. Google index now shows 750 pages of the site.

Another was that the PR of the original .aspx index page was 4( took a long while to build that) It has been a month now & the toolbar is still white (PR0). So obviously I am missing a step. Any suggestions.

However there is a small postscript to this: client is happy since the pages are ranking well & his sales have more than doubled.

It may just be that the PR for everyone's pages will be re-calculated at the next update, as well as for all new pages like your .asp ones.

Google's PageRank is kind of flaky now (see the Google News forum). i don't know if i would fret too much over what the toolbar says. if the client is happy, that's a big plus. if the pages are still ranking well, and sales are being generated, that should be all that matters right now. if you see any change for the worse, then start to worry. i think you'll be fine with some patience.

Hi,

I am going to be doing the exact same thing in the next couple of weekes. I had planned to use URL Rewriting to get around the problems you experienced. I have not had time to look into in properly, but I think it is the best option for change overs if you want to keep the page rank of the pages. As we fought hard for our current page rank as well, and don't want to waste time, and loose position bringing it up again.

Cheers

Don't worry about PR - worry about traffic. If you're getting the traffic Google's liking the site, that's all that matters. It sounds as if you've done everything right, so it's just a matter of continuing to build links, eventually the PR will update but the whole point is rankings and sales, which you've already got.

Hi seo_sherpa

I was under the impression that when you did this sort of thing, the url looses the page rank. Therefore it will loose the ranking position (at least in my market I know this to be true).

If you have any spare time, can you explain exactly the steps you would take if you had to do it again. I would be very interested.

Cheers
