To consolidate or not consolidate?

Hi

I'm considering consolidating several sites onto a single domain using subdomains. In order to get useful feedback I’m afraid I need to give you some background information.

We have a several regional websites (covering a population of 2.5 million) that are currently independent of each other. Each site is different but all operate in the same area, they are...

- A major regional site with over a million pages of content.
- A regional search engine with a page rank of 7
- A local site with video content
- 15 smaller regional websites in a related category
- 8 smaller regional websites in a related category

The regional search engine has until recently been the site with the million pages of content. However that content has all been moved across to a new domain and all sites are hosted from the same place. Because of this we will loose lots of SEO positions but given time these will recover due to the strong brand and volume & quality of content on the sites.

We are considering consolidating all of these domains as subdomains of the regional search engine, and 301 redirecting the existing URL's to the new subdomains.

This change is being considered because of the strategy and branding behind it, however SEO is also a very important concern.

Will this consolidation benefit or harm the each sites page rank and traffic in both the short term and long term?

Any thoughts are appreciated

Definitely consolidate them.
And link the subdomains between them, you'll benefit for PR.
