How do companies rank your site?

Hello,

I have a friend who has just signed up to a company offering top 10 search engine ranking within 10 top search engines (including yahoo, google and msn).

i cannot mention the company's name as i just realised that it is against this forums rules to do so.

This company has a portfolio where they list a client site and put the high ranking keyword next to it, and if you go to google and type that keyword in, the site actually does appear in the top 10.

this company also promises that it doesnt use any techniques that can ban a site (e.g. cloaking, hidden text etc.).

My friend subscribed to them and all they gave was a set of meta tags and a new title tag that contains the keyword within it. They also gave a line of description to be placed as far to the top of the page as possible to assist ranking positions and they also gave a line of code to be placed as far to the bottom of the page as possible to assist ranking positions. The bottom sentence has a link to their site.

I do not want to spend money to do this. I want to learn how this works and would like to try it myself.

Does anyone know how this company can possibly do this just by changing the meta tags and adding a sentence at the top and bottom?

any help would be very much appreciated

many thanx in advance

Shak, its actually more competitive terms e.g. "Boxer Shorts, Cut Diamonds, etc.)

my friend was told to add this meta tag also:

<META NAME="REVISIT-AFTER" CONTENT="2 days">

what does this do?

In short, no one can gaurantee you a top 10 in any engine. No one can even say for definate your site will even be listed.

To an extent it is a game of luck. We can do our best, but sometimes that still isn't enough.

First, it is possible to be in top10 in 10 days, and it even sounds good, but it's definitely not possible for any site, or for any keyword(s), or for any SEO firm, or in any case.

>> The bottom sentence has a link to their site
>> ... to assist ranking positions

The ranking positions that this code assists are the postions of the SEO firm, not those of your friends site.

A firm requiring this is doing SEO for their own site, not for the client. Unless, of course they have a bunch of cloaked pages at that address, which again would be a risky way to do it for the client, as his domain is pointing straight to them, begging the competitors to observe and report.

What have been done sofar (apart from the above) is metatags, title and first paragraph as i see it. The revisit tags might be intended to increase the spidering frequency, but i don't trust that method personally. I haven't tested it though - anyone done so?

It could be a first step out of more, and then it might not be the worst places to start, but possibly not the best either, it all depends on the raw material (the site). These things would hardly do it alone, especially the meta tags are not really that important, but it's hard to judge without context.

I agree with the others though, this does not sound very cool. The thing about the link to their site is simply a no-no. At least as a requirement - if somebody would like to do it afterwards, voluntarily, as a sign of recognition, or gratitude, or whatever, then that's something else. Then again, in that case we'd be talking about one link, not inclusion in the footer.

I'll shut up now, excuse the rambling. If the post has too much jargon, the important words are in blue, just skip the rest.

What's you time worth? $15/hour?

Spend 20 hours here reading posts and then ask the question again.

My bet is that you won't need to and you'll be $500 wiser, as posted above.
