hiya,

I am new here and i'm trying to optimize my site for SE's.
Now i was wondering, since the title tag is the most important thing for the google spiders, when i search google for a certain keyword combination like X Y and in the results there are no other sites that have X Y in their title, will my page rank first than if i put X Y in my title tag?

depends on the keyword set, but if none of the top ten have x y in the title go for it, It certainly won't harm your ranking ;)

Not necessarily. Its possible to have a page rank high even if the relevant keywords arn't present on the page through the power of anchor text.

Titles are good yes, but its just a part of the picture. That said, if no other pages have the keyword in the title then adding it will give you a head start.

And welcome to webmasterworld!

ok thanx guys!
Well i have those keywords a couple more times in the page, but they are placed in <h1> tags in tables that are nested 3-4 levels deep. Can search engines read text at that level or will it just be ignored?

Page Rank is not affected by the Title.

Then drill down and find some on topic subsets for secondary pages...

Search engines generally don't seem to have any problems with text in nested tables.

h1 tags is a curious one though ... h1 means "page title" to me. You can use lesser header tags (h2 onwards) for subheadings.

Forgive the mushiness, but the best way to optimize your site for search engines is to focus on delivering good content to your readers.

To do this you should know what potential readers are searching for as well, use tools like the Overture keyword suggestion tool and wordtracker.com.

Basically, figure out keywords and use those as topics and write content focused on them. This way you can 'organically' develop good traffic because people will like your site.

That's the ideal at least. In reality, a search engine won't appreciate the intrinsic nuances and intangible qualities of good content as much as a reader would, so you have to use these little tricks to spice up your page for the spiders. read this post [webmasterworld.com ]
