There is a very well-known internet marketer (purported to be making in the "millions" from internet marketing) now promoting his "new" submission software for automatic submissiont to over 150 engines.

The promotional copy is filled with misinformation and flat-out untruths.

Worse, the promotional copy doesn't focus on how good the software is, it focuses on how BAD, confusing, expensive, unreliable SEO professionals are. He even started out the diatribe stating he started this new software quest out of shear frustration and disgust (I recall that his website mentions that he will "puke" if another "so-called expert" tells him how to have SEO properly applied).

It is an obvious move to "cash in" on vunerable web site owners with small budgets - but I find the industry-bashing childish and low-balled. Given that his current newsletter subscriber and affiliate group is impressively large from previous online marketing, this type of vicious marketing has the potential to take good clients out of good SEO's hands.

I think what really puzzles me is that the SEO industry seems to be bashed, harrassed, questioned, belittled and attacked more than most other industries. Car companies talk about how great their cars are - not how crappy the other cars are. Most all other industries I can think of try to emphasize what is the latest, greatest, whizziest-bangest things about their new product. Why does it seem that SEO has more than its fair share of people from all sides and all industries talking junk about SEO practices?

The only other business I can think of that thrives on bashing the competitors to gain public favor and sell product (tickets) is the World Wrestling Federation.

What are some of the common practices that some of you use to combat the negative forces and misinformation concerning SEO?

When I see one of these, I check their referrals against the Google toolbar. In most cases, the referrals are white bar. Yes, I know that some users here are of the opinion that isn’t the most accurate method, but the public “knows” Google. Showing page rank to the public has its value.
