I have read not to make your title in a keyword form with commas separating keyword phrases. First of all is this true? And second can you use the (¦) character to acomplish this.
Example:
keyword phrase ¦ keyword phrase 2 ¦ keyword phrase 3
or
keyword phrase ¦ company name

I would think filing your title with nothing but keywords seperated by commas would be consider stuffing, but I've seen it work for others just not something I would recommend as a long term strategy.

I've had great success using colons (:) and would definately recommend using them as you described in your 2nd option. Or...

search term : brief sentence restating your term

I use short, complete sentances. Such as "Blue widgets for your blue widget collection". But I don't see anything wrong with "Blue, red, white, yellow and green widgets for your widget collection" as long as that page is optimized for the keywords "blue widgets", "red widgets", etc. Using "keyword1 ¦ keyword2 ¦ keyword3" seems like keyword stuffing, not only to SE's but to your visitors.

Also, instead of "keyword phrase ¦ company name" another option might be "keyword phrase by Company" or "keyword phrase from Company" or something like that.

It is essential to remember that being high in the SERPs is not an end in itself!

People have to actually decide to click on your link before the placement brings any benefit. I believe that one of the most important factors in deciding which link to click to (of the top few) is the quality of the title. The spammier-looking the title, the less likely I, at least, am to click on it.

A site that has a title of "widgets ¦ blue widgets ¦ green widgets ¦ CHEAP widgets" is very unlikely to be a candidate for viewing.
