They have several different packages, ranging from fairly expensive to VERY expensive (we are a very small, mom/pop company) without naming names, here's an idea of what they're offering... I know a lot of you guys own SEO companies, so I was wondering if you could tell me if this is a rip-off or not:
1. top 20 gaurantee = about $500 onetime + $40/mth
2. top 10 gaurantee = $1000 + $80/mth
The other programs I can't really afford so no question about them.
Since we're not even launched yet, I have no idea of my conversion rates, but my sales will not be big-ticket items, probably average $15-20 per sale.
Any advice?
Positions on individual key phrases means nothing - good traffic means everything. A good SEO will bring you up for hundreds of phrases that work for the client - not a few that may not.
Reading here will do good for you to know what theyre selling you even if you dont want to do it yourself. Don't get taken for a ride. If its so easy to gaurantee top 10 then put me there first, after im there ill pay you ;) <<but thats not how business works>>
/me puts himself for stone throwing by many seos.
:D
The prices alone are not bad, but your buying into something that they cant control VERY well, this is my belief, it could be because im not as good as them or i think that everyone in the world is out to make a buck without backing themselves. ;)
My Two cents,

Also my question is when an seo does all this work for you and you stop using them does you site placement all of a sudden fall dramatically? Why use an SEO company after they have optimized your site?
Yeah I am curious to know how, if any way, top SEO companies can get you better placement. Aside from the work they do to optimize your site, it seems they must have some kind of relationships with google, yahoo so that their clients show up higher than others'.
Nope. Learning and applying the optimization techniques that have been proven to work.
My sense is that some really top SEO companies have relationships as well and that is what you are paying thousands of dollars a month for. Comments?
Nope, you are paying for the work.

Most of the time you pay them for maintenance, which will include a number of things:
- adding content
- tweaking pages to increase rank
- link pop
- SE submissions
- PFI management
- Directory submissions
- ranking reports
- other
This is somewhat true, but not in the way you're thinking. I agree with what agerhart is saying that you're paying for the work done by these firms, and reaping the rewards of their experience and knowledge, some of which may have been gathered by forming good relationships with contacts within the major SE's.
Those "relationships" cannot guarantee you any sort of top placement or what have you, but the information shared is often priceless.
>>when an seo does all this work for you and you stop using them does you site placement all of a sudden fall dramatically?
not necessarily. If an seo has done quality work, then a site will usually maintain placement for a little while at least, some for YEARS, but the fact is that this is a dynamic industry & you really need to be somewhat on top of changes and keep up with your SEO work.
but if your "SEO" was really only using PPC to get you on top, and then you cancel your contract with them, you'd definitely see those paid listings disappear.
