You need some inbound links from other sites.

The more competitive the field that you are in, the more links/higher quality links you will need to do well in the SERPS.

I agree with Trillianjedi, you will definitely need some inbound links. Inbound links are like "votes" to the search engines, and the search engines make you more important with the number of inbound links you have.
