I was on word tracker and was going over the KEI for the keyword phrases I had chosen.

Take a keyword, for instance: "widget manufacturing"

On google, the KEI score for "widget manufacturing" was a relatively low 17.5 ... On MSN however, the same keyword had a KEI score of 52000 or something silly-huge like that.

How come there's a huge difference like that? the Google 17.5 score came as no surprise, the keyword should have been pretty competitive... but the MSN thing just blew me away.

Should I take advantage by making a doorway page with lots of content geared specifically for "widget manufacturing" and submit only that page to MSN?

Thoughts are appreciated.

Cheers,
shasan

From WordTrackers Site:

The KEI compares the Count result (number of times a keyword has appeared in our data) with the number of competing web pages to pinpoint exactly which keywords are most effective for your campaign.

In a nutshell: Look for the keywords near the top. The higher the KEI, the more popular your keywords are, and the less competition they have. Which means you have a better chance of getting to the top.

Detailed:
The KEI is a measure of how effective a keyword is for your web site. The derivation of the formula for KEI is based on three axioms:

1) The KEI for a keyword should increase if its popularity increases. Popularity is defined as the number present in the "Count" column of WordTracker. This axiom is self-explanatory.

2) The KEI for a keyword should decrease if it becomes more competitive. Competitiveness is defined as the number of sites which a search engine e.g. AltaVista displays when you search for that keyword using exact match search.

What I was wondering is how can a keyword have such a high KEI on MSN and be so insignificant on Google?

I have to take advantage of it, so is it wise to make a separate doorway page optimized for that keyword and submit it only to MSN?

You get some outrageous KEI ratings on MSN because Wordtracker usually counts only the Featured and LookSmart listings and ignores the Inktomi listings when it calculates how many sites are competing for the keyword. So, essentially, you have to be in LookSmart to take advantage of those outrageous ratings.

I see. Thanks. It seems that the keyword I was talking about is fairly competitive in Lycos. I *thought* that was too good to be true :)

They should put a star next to MSN results and explain that to us newbies.
