I'm about to start developing a new website and have heard horror stories on using SEO companies so the onus on marketing my site and directing traffic to it is on me!
What I need is some clear advice as to the best method(s) of increasing my page ranking on google and other search engines. I will also be using AdWords so any help and advice on how to maximise my rankings there would be very much appreciated.
I'm not afraid of hard work but the thought of trawling the web to get fragmented information on this subject is not appealing in the slightest and would probably involve six months work in itself!
Thanks in advance.

For a long term Google strategy, Brett's Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone [webmasterworld.com] is still probably the best place to start, even 16 months after he wrote it (a long time in SEO). A lot of the advice is applicable to other engines too.
In terms of site construction; page titles, body text and link text from other sites are all very important. The theme pyramid [searchengineworld.com] site structure is the easiest to work with.
I'm having a tough time trying to understand why another website owner would allow linking to my website if we are in similar businesses? Perhaps someone could enlighten me!
The 'Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone' topic is indeed full of interesting content but again as I'm a newbie a number of his terms are meaningless to me but I guess as I re-read it and carry on searching and learning on this forum it will become a little less 'foggy'!
My website is based on an affiliate scheme where the only thing I have to design and build is the welcome page and a navigation bar, the online ordering facility is provided to me by the company of which I am affiliated to and the content (the actual items with pictures, etc.) is derived by the central frame. Will this affect how my page is ranked, etc?
Thanks in advance.

for adwords, head on over to [webmasterworld.com...] everything you need has been asked, and feel free to ask about things which you do NOT understand.
however on reading your post, I was a bit concerned about "your project" as an affiliate and basically just building the menu structure etc etc.
the main and important bit for SEO is Unique content, however unless I am mistaken, the content that you will have will be the same as 100s of other websites.
please do not let me sound negative, as that business model has made quite a few millionaires (a few are on this board), however it will limit you in controlling what keywords etc etc is getting indexed by the search engines.
