Hi,

I am new to the Search Engine Promotion thing. I need some help to get my site listed in as many search engines as possible aswell as listed on the highest possible postition. One thing i know is that the search engine looks for a particular keyword and checks how often that keyword is mentioned in the site. I noticed that many people do this and make the fone color white so that no one can see it. I've been told by someone that I can use a hidden layer and within there put the keywords as many times as possible. Is this so? What else can I do to improve my ranking?

I've also been told that the more external links i have on my site the better my ranking is. is this true? how can this be?

And finally, in the index.html file of my site i have the following meta tag:

<meta name="Robots" content="index,nofollow">

i put that coz i didnt want search engines listing my internal links, ive been told that in order to get a good ranking i should make that follow instead of nofollow.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Cheers
Linda

Linda,

[webmasterworld.com...] contains some good information.

Some of the advice given in your post may give short term results but would probably trip spam filters.

Repetition of keywords can get picked up if the words are close together and the density is too high.

Hidden text can be detected and I've read in forum 3 will get penalised, although the penalty on G gets removed when the hidden text is removed.

Not sure about the external links, on the one hand they can reduce page rank on the other if the links are useful then there may be some benefit to your visitors.

I would remove the tag as robots would follow links on the page anyway.

Good advice Symbios,

I would also suggest you visit SEW to check out more information regarding the use of robots.txt

Why?

Do a site search for "hidden text"

> more external links i have on my site the better my ranking is.<

Lots of variables..........The more inbound quality links the better.

The best advice I can offer is read. When your done, read some more.

Linda,

Start off your reading with Brett's famous Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone [webmasterworld.com] posting, and forget all the things you heard on the street.

For questions on linking go the the linking forum and look at some of the threads in the library (link at top of page).

Invisible text and similar things are like fireworks (today is the Fourth of July, and in the USA we celebrate with fireworks). They are great if you know exactly what you are doing, otherwise they have a tendency to explode in your face with very bad consequences.

So, you are suggestion that i should get rid of the following meta tag:

<meta name="Robots" content="index,nofollow">

But then this will cause search engines to follow and index all my internal links that i dont want search engines linking to. I've also used a robots.txt to disable search engines from indexing internal files.

Also, I have hidden alot of keywords in a image tag like this:

<img src="image.gif" alt="keyword, keyword, keyword, ">

does this improve search engine ranking?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers
