Plural & singular versions in the 10 keywords?

I am trying to incorporate Brett's model of a properly themed sites but I have a delima. When it is said to pick 10 keywords. Should that actually say 10 keywords & phrases or should I stick to single words? If I pick phrases there will be alot of repeated words.

That also leads me to another question. Out of these 10. How should I aproach whether or not to make the words singular or plural. I could split it down the middle and make half singular and half plural but I am not sure. I know how some SE's care about this while others give the same result for either.

Get 10 core keywords, build a page around each word or even multiple pages around each word. From there, watch your referral logs for what kw combos to focus on for more pages. Look for close matches and retro design more pages to target those new kw's coming from the engines.

To further confozzle the issue:
Is it actually necessary to include the overall thematic keyword within the keyword list?
I'm beginning to think that , in working with themes and properly establishing one, that the SEs will see the thematic keyword as a given and sort according to what would then become secondary keywords...depending on keyword phrase (read: individual page topic)

Am I getting the right idea?
Stumbling onto someone else's approach?
Or just out in left field waiting for someone to tell me that the game's over and PFP won a few weeks ago?
