Hi!

I'm new to search engine optimization. I wonder if it pays off to subscribe to SearchEngineWatch ($69 for 6 months) or maybe som other sites? I need to know where it's good to start for a newbie. Are there other free or subscription search engine optimization resources that I should know about?

Thanks in advance!

This forum is useful, but I wanted to find a place with more in depth articles on optimization. Thanks for the link to searchengineworld, any other sites that I should know about? Does anybody have any experience with searchenginewatch?

I still vote for this place, check the Google library, each forum here has its own library of the best posts, some of them have some of the most talented seo's on the planet giving away their secrets.

> place with more in depth articles on optimization

These guys have already said it. It's all here, just look.

This is a good pointer:
[webmasterworld.com...]

For in-depth, it's here [webmasterworld.com...]

For search engines, it's here
[webmasterworld.com...]

For marketing, it's all here
[webmasterworld.com...]

For webmasters, it's here
[webmasterworld.com...]

etc.

Many people have not resurfaced for some time having gone into the depths at WebmasterWorld. We bring 'em up for air every so often. ;-)

I beg to dissent from the official party line.

There is no better way for a beginner to get started than with a good set of tutorials, something that is woefully missing here.

Bulletin board threads contain a mixture of good information, plain wrong information and irrelevant discussions. An experienced user can sort them out, and for such a user they are very valuable. But for a beginner they are just confusing.

Mohamed, I don't think there's an official party line here.

From my own experience: I started with publishing a (non-)commercial site, didn't know anything about promotion, SEs or anything.
But - I soon saw I wanted more visitors:) So I started roaming through the web looking for information. It didn't take long before it dawned on me that SEs were the answer.

I vaguely remember how I read through several tutorials, feeling very uncomfortable with them. The stuff laid out there was often outdated, they were talking about search engines I knew were not important anymore. Each new tutorial seemed to disagree with the next.
And I always had the feeling the authors weren't entirely honest, didn't tell the whole truth, were not cutting edge, wanted to sell me something.

What I wanted was info from fellow webmasters. Those would be the people who would have no interest talking BS, wanting to sell me anything, posturing as omniscient grand masters. I would be able to ask those people, and ask them again. That's why I started visiting forums.

When I arrived here at WebmasterWorld I first confined myself to a little corner, the Euro forum, specifically the German discussions.
It was soon clear this was exactly what I had been looking for: an extremely friendly, open, yet serious atmosphere on the one hand, high quality info on the other.
The most important step for me was to join in to discussions. Nothing forces you more to learn and understand.

No official party line... but here's the best short answer I've seen (quoting DaveAtIFG who was commenting about this thread to other mods):

SEO is difficult to write about in any venue since it's such a fast moving target. I don't think we're the best resource for beginners, they need to acquire an overview, develop a BS detector, and consider any information through a filter that emcompasses WHEN the info was created or published.
I don't think there is one good resource. Those skills are only developed through trial and error and experience. A beginner doesn't even know he needs them!

Now where was that tutorial I wrote on getting into AV?......
