I have a site with many links out of the website and into another with supporting content.

When the page is spidered in general for the engines, will it hurt or help if the links are in the form of redirects with supporting keywords in the filenames?

ie: mysite (affodable-cars.com) example link redirect (affordable-cars.com/1988-honda-accord.htm) to supporting contect (cars.com/cars/makehonda&year1999&otherlongfilename)

Redirects are usually considered as doorway pages by SE and frowned upon. If you are offering static link on the page (amongst other content and links) to the supporting site, you should be fine.
