Does using more HTML dilute your keyword rankings?

Does using extra HTML tags decrease the effect of your keywords and thus your ranking?

That is, is it better to go for the full HTML of say <IMG src="image" height="50" width="50" border="0"> or just <IMG src="image">

Does it make any difference?

Welcome to WebmasterWorld KennyJ,

HTML tags will generally not dilute you keyword density. Other content will. Most search engines spider strip the HTML code before indexing you site anyway.

All the extra tags will do is slow the loading of the page as more data has to be downloaded. However, this is usually remote.

Thanks Chris!

- that's what I thought but my boss was convinced that I would ruin our ratings by using "good" HTML.
