What's up with this tag: <p class="bottomINv">

Getting a low-content page to rank high, I think

I came upon a site that ranked well for a very competitive phrase, though they had almost no relevant content on the page... I looked at the code and many paragraphs of relevant text, after this tag: <p class="bottomINv">

None of the text was visible on the page.

I obviously don't know much about spamming techniques, as I have always tried to do well by providing content.

So, what is going on at that site?

Hidden text. I'd guess that "INv" means "invisible."

Hope they read WebmasterWorld - The filters are coming!

The class="bottomINv" is a call to CSS. You can find the "bottomINv" definition by viewing the source and downloading the (most-likely) attached CSS file.

If you want to see whether they have blocked the SE from retrieving their CSS file, you can download the "www.theirsite.com/robots.txt" file and check to see if either the file or the directory containing the file has been marked as disallowed to search bots.

I'm not certain of the impact cloaking the CSS file would have on maintaining a spammed SE listing, though.
