Would I be unwise to use a rellevant .biz domain for a new business or should I find a .com domain? Are there any advantages or disadvantages of one over the other?

With regard to SEO I don't see any advantage to one over the other. However, there is the matter of how your site is perceived by people.

Biz is an informal word, if your site is trendy and hip then a dot biz might work as long as the tone of your site is informal. If your copy is staid then you'd be better off with a dot com.

I think you need to look at the tone of your site to see if dot biz will work. mortuary.biz may not fly while buttonmaker.biz might work well.

I would suggest the .com over the .biz, with basically the same reasons DigitalGhost pointed out above.

How about purchasing both of them?

From a marketing point of view I would say to go for the .com version for 2 main reasons.
1 similar to stated before it is pulic perception i.e the .com is far more recognised gobally and remembered by potential clients.
2 in my experiance the search engines pick up .coms better than .biz domains
