Hi,

I am thinking about helping a friend improve her website, but for some reason the original company that created the site has it registered to the .gs domain. My best guess is that the design firm registered this domain because it was the only way they could obtain a match to her business name.

I do not think my friend is savvy enough to understand this is a country specific extension for "South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands."

There are quite a few links out there that come in to this particular URL. Can anyone advise me about the risks/problems that she may face if she keeps this particular extension? Obviously her business is not part of the "South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands." Will the page ranking of the site be lower since the country extension is not US based?

Thanks for your help and feedback

I don't see a big problem. If her business name contains a keyword it could even help in the SERP if you get links using the domain name as link text. AFAIK there is no such thing as "pages from the US" as there is on www.google.co.uk for British pages.
