Are we looking at a pre-Holiday reorg of the SEs

Are they cleaning house to get ready for St. Nick?

Many of the SEs seem to be slow to re-index, tweaking their algorithms and changing alliances . Inktomi seems to be in a fugue state, Excite and InfoSeek don't seem to be real anxious to add new pages. Some of the others haven't added new pages in some time. Google and AV seem to be the most active. Are we seeing a pre-holiday "cleansing" and new-look SEs will miraculously appear to add the harried shopper in spending his/her money or have the SEs started to show early signs of the coming "Internet Depression" and Christmas isn't going to help? Or am I just grasping at straws trying to understand why so many of the spidering SEs seem to be dormant since the "dot com" crash on the stock market and the increase in postings in the Dot Com Morgue?

I have not even thought to look at it that way, Could be right. I know AV did some cleansing on Monday. Ink is just not dong anything and google can always be counted on to spider... Oops AV as well..

Anyone else have an opinon on this subject?

I think it is a collective "holding of their breath" taking a wait and see attitude. Now isn't the time for changes - the time was this summer. Only Altavista has broken that mold by changing about this time last year.

I really think we are just seeing se's trying to survive this year unscathed. With the layoffs at Alta, the continued mega red tape at Excite, they are trying 'not to rock the boat'. It is a time to be conservative and make profit any way possible.

Also, many of the se's are looking at Europe and putting resources over there (lycos) right now and letting the American side slide-by on status quo.

imo

Most SEs are in a reduce costs mode.
They have read that this Christmas Season will see the end of many e-commerce sites.
They have read about the burn rates and see that the 1st and 2nd quarter of 2001 could be BAD.
Ad revenues will fall in the near future and they are getting ready.

Isn't it rather interesting just what the se's have done this fall?

Alta inks with Goto.
Ink, inks with cloakers and sells spidering.
Yahoo nukes commercial free submit.
Goto shows up everywhere on the planet.
