I noticed today MSN has indexed my site..I thougth MSN charges to index your site? anyway MSN has brought me loads of traffic while google only brings in a few. MY question is, why pay so much attention to google? seems like MSN has all the up to date websites and informaion.

I have noted a HUGE jump in MSN traffic over the past few weeks on many of our Client's sites... It might be a good sign!

My main industry doesn't get traffic from MSN (they sell them all to a third party), but overall - I think most people get more from google.

But whatever works for you.

Most people are going to concentrate on google - as they seem to have a much easier to understand system.

And of course - all their main listings are free.

Google gets its traffic by providing a quality search engine. MSN gets theirs through advertising and partnership deals.

The more savvy web users use google. This isn't necessarily better. Depending on your market - having MSN traffic could be better than google.

I am guessing that more people are using sites like Yahoo & MSN as they want to check on news stories at the moment.

Here [submitit.bcentral.com] is where i submit the sites without paying to get indexed. It may take some time until the whole site is indexed, but it`s worth the waiting. ;)

MSN can bring in some very good traffic, in terms of volume and conversion (by paying or for free depending on the area and market), especially in the UK.

I like the MSN traffic because often the search results are not as accurate and targeted as those on Google. So if a visitor comes to your site, and find what they are looking for, the chances are they will stay because the other search results were not attractive.

Surely any search engine strategy should target both Google and MSN, every extra bit of converting traffic is worth having.

PS - Thanks for the link Tor ;)

There are many ways into the MSN search results, and many do involve payment. But Inktomi (one of the MSN search partners) has begun indexing the whole web (almost) for free. Also not for profit sites can get into the LookSmart directory for free by submitting to Zeal.

I have these figures (average of 10+ com domains in english, last three months):

Google between 60 and 80 %
Yahoo between 10 amd 20%
MSN between 7 and 15 %

Only marginal increase of MSN figures in the last 2 weeks.

I'll keep an eye on it.

@Tor: thanks :-)
