Where do we stand on the use of micro-sites?

There seems to be a lot of variation in the use of micro-sites for optimization purposes.

- Separate domains, hosted on client's server
- Separate domains, hosted on SEO's server
- Same domain, separate section of client site, linking to main site
- Subdomains of client site, linking to main site

What's the general concensus on what works best, and what's the most acceptable from the search engine's point of view?

Micro sites are not all that welcome to se's. Whichever way you to it, there needs to be sufficient original quality content.
