Web Rings

Are they as bad as link farms?

G'day, I've been reading this forum for about a month but this is my first post.

I've read a lot about how sites can be penalised by some engines if they are part of a "link farm" to artificially raise your link pop. My question is would joining a Yahoo Web Ring fall into that category too - are there risks of being penalised? This particular web ring I'm looking at has a Google PR of 5 on it's home page - does that suggest that Google thinks it's OK?

Any comments would be much appreciated. Cheers
G

The ring page has PR5 because all the sites have hard links back to it, but that doesn't follow for the other sites in the ring.

No, they're not the same as link farms, but still only legitimate ones should be joined.
