My site has a PR7 but after this latest index I went from page 2 to 4? Removed some content and changed the title could that have been the reason? Sites on page 1 have less PR but more content. It seems that keyword domains wins out.

welcome to webmasterworld.

You will hear certain people repeatedly say that PR is NOT everything.

as you mentioned listings have dropped!

but for which keyword?

naturally if you changed the title from Cars > Holidays, and then are doing searched for Cars, you are going to drop.

PR is only part of the puzzle, you really have to work hard on the other bits.

Review your titles and descriptions with a fine tooth comb, and you should be able to pick out where you went wrong.

With a PR7 you should be able to tower above your competition.
Definitely looks like you need to do some work on your site. Especially titles and internal linkage.
When you say keyword domain win sout, then you could only refer to the fact that external linking does tend to carry the keywords. With a PR7 however you are not dependant on external linking. You have enough punch on your internal links. Use them widely.

Maybe worth looking at:

Removed some content and changed the title

If thats all you changed then it seems likely. Is the title less focused than it was?

Are you seeing many new sites above you in this index that weren't there before?

For keyword domains, its the inbound link text that gives the advantage. They may have less links but with the right keywords in the anchor text for every one.

edit > bit too slow off the mark there ;-)

Site has plenty of inbound links. Title does not start with the competitive keyword that I'm targeting. Title starts with name of the company which includes the keyword -then description. Should the title start with the keyword-then description? Its looks to me that most of the sites on page 1 titles start with the keyword?

Keyword here - company name would be a better title.

As said earlier, PR is just one part of the algo. I am consistently surprised that I can outrank pages with a PR6 or 7 with a PR2 or 3 page simply because the former have ignored title tags and/or suitable content.
