Is it "ethical" to put your competition's name in your meta tags?

Is this a stupid question?

Do people do this? I'm developing a web service and I wanted to put my "competition's" name in my meta tags. Is this dumb, smart or neutral?

This is dumb. You could get sued for it.

It would be better to put in the body of the text that your product is better than 'competitor x'. If you can prove this then it may be okay.

Dumb :)

There are more effective means of targetting the phrases they just need a little more work.
