Does this happen to anyone else?

I keep a very close eye on my logs, and what people search for when they end up at my site. I imagine most of you do as well.

I notice, more and more now, that multiple people are searching for the same or similar term within a short period of time and ending up at my site. For instance, several people will search for "widget history" within a period of a few hours and end up at my site, when I hardly receive traffic for that search term before that several-hour time window, or after.

Perhaps it's just coincidence. Maybe the things that people are searching for are things they're seeing in the news, so it happens many times over a short period. Or maybe my ranking for those keywords is changing for a few hours and then changing back -- I haven't checked.

Anyone else notice anything like this?

I noticed a similar thing recently. When people make enquiries about 'widgets' on our site they get a detailed email back and we receive an auto email regarding their enquiry.

I've noticed on two of our sites that, there will be no business for a couple of hours, then both sites receive four or five emails within half an hour. Strange.

oooh..

has it been happening recently? are the incommings from regional googles or the .com? do the incomming hits coincide with a hit from googlebot?

It happened to me markedly last month. A hit from GB, surrounded by half a dozen incomming hits reffered from google.

It seemed to mark the start of the dance!?

I haven't been able to associate it with Google specifically as we get business from different engines and the guy who was supposed to configure our HitsLink account hasn't finished yet, so the engine source is undefined.

It seems to have been happening most days over past couple of months.

I see spurts like this all the time, whether in the logs or on site search reports. I tend to chalk it all off to the "Big Hat" theory of demand where a haberdashery gets 25 different requests for size 8 1/8 hats in one week. The store stocks up on large-sized hats and sells exactly one -- to the guy whose friends and family were all trying to find him a hat that would fit.

yetanotheruser,

<has it been happening recently?>

Within the past month or so.

<are the incommings from regional googles or the .com?>

Usually from the .com.

<do the incomming hits coincide with a hit from googlebot?>

Not that I've been able to notice.
