Is hosting multiple domains under one ip bad?

Is this bad for search engine rankings?

I am hoping someone has some informatioin regarding hosting multiple web sites under one IP. Is Google going to be able to recognize the boundries of one domain from the others? Also do you think Google would assign a lower PR to the virtual hosted domains?

I have hosted (and still am hosting) multiple sites under one IP for quite a while and have never had a problem with Google.

Cool - this could save me some money if it works. What about other search engines? Any of those like Yahoo have a problem with this.

To ammend, I have had no problems with ANY search engines or directories.

As long as you don't have duplicate content under each domain, you should be fine.

Name based virtual hosting is rather common by now. If SEs couldnīt handle it their indices would be a lot smaller. Of course using name based virtual hosting adds another source for errors since both the DNS and webserver can get it wrong but that has never been a problem for me.

I've got all my sites sharing a couple of IPs without any problem with the search engines. Virtual domains are fairly common and used worldwide. I don't see any reason why this would cause a different ranking (or positionning).

I've looked into this a bit as I'm planning a few sites at the same IP. The consensus of what I read is that Google doesn't like interlinking between same-IP sites before each site has developed some traffic in its own right.

I plan to be cautious, and only install relevant links gradually after a while. By relevant I mean 'enhancing the content' :)

Same IP or not, that's a good idea. Excessive crosslinking can end up being penalized even when the sites aren't on the same IP -- and conversely linking sites that share an IP isn't necessarily a problem or a risk.

Absolutely not. PageRank is a measure of links. Barring a site-specific penalty, sharing an IP has no effect on PageRank.
