Separate domains or just folders?

I've been wrestling with this question for quite some time and now have to decide what to do. I was thinking of several seperate domains on the same server with related content. Or, I can go with just one domain and put the seperate related sites into folders (or subdomains).

I'd like to get listed in directories (DMOZ) as well as SE's. Which method above is better (or does it really matter)?

I think it depends on how much content you have and how diverse the content. If it is quite a ways apart topic wise, then go with the individual domains. If it is close, then go for the mega content site and build and empire around the main domain.

They're pretty much related...so I guess the answer is one mega-site with several sub-sites in folders or sub-domains. I guess it'd would be cheaper, too.
