I am currently working on my baby... yes, doing SEO for my own site! It feels good to work on myself for a change.
MY site is a 3 word keyword phrase kw1-kw2-kw3.com. I used to have 1st-kw1-kw2-kw3.com. Embarassingly, I messed up and registered 1st-kw1-kw2-kw3mispelled.com as well. Now that yahoo is googled, I wont be using these URL's.
So now I have 3 url's that are keyword dense and on topic.
What I've done is placed a stripped version of my main site's topics FAQ at those other 2 URL's, and each of those sites have a link at the bottom to kw1-kw2-kw3.com, as well as the other 2 big players in the industry, the manufacturer, and their individual product page for what I am promoting, which is a seperate URL.
I feel that these info sites, while SEO'd, also offer a good service in providing good info. I also feel like I may be missing a pitfall here if i don't watch out.
Now, I've noticed another info page on the same topic very similar to mine spring up, and I can tell its from a SEO company. It seems they dont have a link to their client yet, or perhaps they are waiting to add it when they need to direct traffic somewhere.
Should I be waiting to add a link to my main site later, and having the link now is maybe inviting closer inspection?
Are my info pages a good idea, or should they both or one be a mirror?
I've considered keeping a fully working version at both URL's, and not just a info page.... thoughts on that? I don't want to get in trouble for dupe sites.
Should the 2 info pages be linked together at all?
The more i read here the more I tweak, and i find myself, after months of work on this site, checking googles future search every morning for signs of spidering... this suspense is worse than last nights "24" cliffhanger. :)
The idea of linking to a few similar sites is also good because it does not directory associate you with the pages that in effect could be classed as cleverly devised doorway pages.
It's just a good way of gaining extra Pr to your mnain site by getting as much PR as possible to the sub sites that link to your homepage. I think i woudl also host the other domain on a different server to avoid the chanced of googlebot picking up in the same ip address.

Is it actually worth doing this? - do most search engines value keyords - seperated by dashes in the domain name?
I've also read that branding is the 'new' thing, even as search engines still recognize keywords in the domain.

value keywords in the domain name in general?
or value hyphen delimited keywords in the domain name MORE that just kw1kw2kw3.com
In my reading, I have seen kw1-kw2-etc stated as the ideal way to take advantage of that SE algorythm.
So, your answers are yes, and yes.
I'd also say that kw's in your domain are much less important than good content and incoming links.
