Submitting a site many times a problem?

I have been told that:
Submitting a web site that has been already indexed can harm my ranking. Fair enough.

If this is true, what stops my competitors from submitting my site repeatedly?
and getting my site blacklisted?

I dont think it would too big an issue, like you say, your competitors can abuse it.

If it happens frequently, it may be looked into, but if you're not doing anything wrong then there's no problem.

I've heard that people re-submit their site a few times a week, just to try to keep it fresh with Google. Are you saying that this is not good practice?

I had just typed a really good reply to this, but then the thread was moved and i couldnt post it! :(

And now i have to retype it! :(

But im not going to.

Basically, yes, bad practice, as it is entirely unecessary. Your ranking is based on content and inbound links. It makes no difference how often you resubmit.

If you're trying to get listed for the first time, then your best bet is to get a link from another site.

At www.google.com/webmasters/facts.html Google says:

Fiction: A website will be removed from Google's index if it's 'over-submitted'.

Fact: We do not require submission nor do we penalize sites for 'over-submission'. You are free to submit as often as you wish. However, given the nature of our inclusion process, your time is better spent improving the content and links of your site.

It's helpful to me to spend time on all the search engine guidelines pages. They don't explain everything, but it really does help.

I couldn't post either :(

I said that you would have to submit your site more like one or twice every few minutes for it to be banned! Google is aware of this, there was a thread about this only the other day!

I am of to do a few submissions of sites ;)

This _used_ to be very true with several engines until they got wise. I've not heard of it being an issue since 99.

One can hope so, or competitors would be setting up bots to repeatedly submit the competition.

I don't think it will help with directories! SEs mainly ignore submissions anyway and just spider from good links (IMHO). How many have submit URLs these days - I've not used (or found) one (apart from AV and ATW) since August 2000!?

IMHO, the only one worth submitting to directly is AV, or should I say is sometimes necessary to submit to to get aditioanal pages listed. Google, ATW, Teoma, WiseNut, Inktomi, are gonna list what they're gonna list without payment based on existing links to your site, not submissions.
