King who?

CONTENT: If content is King and we all know it is, how much content is considered Content?

Is 400-500 words per page considered to be enough content? Or should we be building 600-700 word pages?

I like to keep pages relatively short, 400-500 seems to be enough for me.

Content also needs to be as unique as possible and informative i might add.

Any one else have any opinions on this?

Most of my old pages are 400-500 or less. I've recently switched to buying content from freelancers that runs 1000-3000. It's an intuitive call... can't really tell you why I'm doing it, except to increase 'authority.' I figure that I can always break them down into smaller units.

Are you talking content to give SE robots their sought after high, or simply content that actually makes some sense to the user?

For UI, the short, sweet, get to the point approach meets usability requirements. Above the fold, no hype, tell 'em clearly and hyperlink them outta there. That's the kind of content recommended for quality sites.

Engines, on the other hand, want a ream of targeted cleverly placed words that tell it what the page is about. Not too many words, or too little. It's like the Three Bears story and we're all Goldilocks looking for exact fit.

Rarely do I see a mixture of both elements on a web page. And you're right to ask about content. For as long as the Internet has been up and running, we're still working out the details of what to put on it, how and for whom. (Engines or users? Both?)

I agree with much of what Kim said. For engines, I think long term success is in diversity. Huge pages and small pages. That the Google delimia: they love micro 3-4k pages, while at the same time there is a set of 90-101k pages doing great on Google. That sort of diversity is true across all the se's. One time they want small ones, the next large.
