Google Relevance - Too much is a bad thing?

A recent posting noted a search term where virtually the entire search term was dominated by a single company with multiple doorway pages/sub-domains with identical content.

They must be patting themselves on their back, as well as their seo "expert." This struck me as a ridiculous way to "win."

In SEO, the winner doesn't take it all. In fact, if you do, you will attract attention from your competitors and be reported.

The goal (for me at least) shouldn't be to achieve world domination for a set of keywords, but rather to score well in the top ten. To dominate the ENTIRE listings is short-sighted and invites long term catastrophe.

One question: How did the furniture sex people get off the hook for their hidden text penalty? They seem to be back in action.

Indeed, but perhaps their SEO isnt aware of the consequences of what he or she is doing.

A quick glimpse at "how to optimise your site" websites and they are in the technical know how, without considering the implications.

Im not defending them, though. At the end of the day its down to the SEO to operate ethically, not the source of their knowledge.
