I just joined the forum, my interest is topics about aol. I designed a site and the client wants high ranking in Aol. Any suggestions? ... Any research material is great.

In order to get in AOL, you must submit your site to ODP, the Open Directory Project. Their URL is www.dmoz.org
ODP is a directory that AOl (among others) use as their source.
Make sure that you review the submission guidelines first as ODP has fairly stringent guidelines. Hope this helps.

AOL mmm not a good one to start with, the best place to start is in the inktomi forum, after you've picked your self off the floor don't hint the panic button to hard as this can only be an temporary problem although this time it does seem to be hanging around.

also with ODP as well

The best way into AOL is through 1) canada.com 2) anzwers.com 3) hotbot and pray :)

If you new to search engines I would recommend Altavista.com, they are indexing sites quite quickley around 2/3 weeks.

When you submit to DMOZ will it be to a regional catagory?

I have a client who wanted good AOL listings. I didn't do anything specific for AOL, except to be sure I did a good submission to ODP and then do the best overall optimization I could. Now four months later, and the site has stayed between positions 5 and 20 on the most important keyword.

The thing that was important for me to notice, was that the client's intuition about AOL being important for their crafts-oriented site was correct. Week after week, AOL is number one or two for search engine referrals for them. Better than Yahoo Directory, Google, Snap, or LookSmart where they also enjoy a high rank.

I have also noticed that AOL is always among the top referers of the sites that I promote; but if you think about it, it makes a lot of sense. You know AOL stinks, I know AOL stinks, but be that as it may, there are millions of mindless newbies who use them, and bizarre as this may sound, I'll bet half of them (if not more) don't even realize that there are other search engines out there!
I started taking AOL rankings very seriously!

this was quite a big help for me until my rankings went with freeserve, perhaps we could try to get people in the uk to move over to AOL :)

I want to let you know this is new territory- web design, web submission and web gold. Certainly, this is great from the creative aspect! As a novice, there is lots to learn! Reading the forum topics, it's quite informative. I must say, you all are professional and top notch in this field. So, I hope you don't mind a question or two from time to time.
Thanks for the information regarding AOL, I submitted a few months ago, and resubmitted 2 weeks ago. The ranking is the same. The person prefers aol because its what's on their system. The submission was geared towards a regional business category, I would like to add another category such as links or newspaper. Can I submit the same domain name.com/links.htm to dmoz or is there a penalty? I've submitted to other search engines, still need to wait, including av.
Question for tigger: what is meant by " change their default home page?"

There's lots to learn- creating doorways, having links, and especially writing themes.
So far, very positive about Northern Light(regardless the disconnection w/web gold), Snap, Hotbot, Google, Infoseek, Iwon... disappointed about Netscape's connection and why are there engines charging? Of course for profit, yet competitors service is free.

Everyone who is on the web can use any search they want, no matter what Interent Service Provider they use - but many people never realize this or take the time to look around very far.

If I'm looking into a general topic, I often go to IXQuick.com first and get an overview of the top sites on 14 different search engines. I usually can a good handle on what I want this way, and quickly sort out which sites are more accurate. It's a funny thing, the more "information" gets put in the web, the more WRONG information gets spread around.

Otherwise, I like AltaVista and Google when I'm searching for harder to find information. They both have a lot of pages in their indexes, and AltaVista in particular has been my favorite for personal searching over a long time.

sorry if this sounds to basic, when you set up your ISP they will normally set as the default home page their own, in other words if you use AOL to access the interenet you will probably find the first page after you go online is AOL.

You can change this to what ever you want by clicking on tools, internet options the first box will normally be high lighted, you can then change to any url you want.

Would be great if they switched from Freeserve to AOL US - AOL UK however is worse than Freeserve, uses UK Plus and Inktomi (currently on 'small/old' database) and their search server keeps crashing! Move them to Virgin (which uses Google) or even AltaVista ;)

Well, I've completely dropped out of aol, category-regional area & products.
Yet, when go to category- regional area & job profession stayed the same.
