What are some BASICS for optimizing your site for submission?

Is there a check list to follow?

Can't think of a better list than the following:

in reviewing the excellent info in the recommended threads, i see the importance of having target words in the url. my question is this: can one change this, e.g., if WIDGET/IRRELEVANTWORD.COM is replaced with WIDGET/TARGETWORD, without losing whatever search engines listing original address? or would it be worth it anyway? thanks.

The search engines will keep the old directory address in their serps for at least a month (FAST not as long). The SE's will keep sending folks to your old directory. You'll have to put up some kind of landing page.

Your rankings will suffer before they get better. IF they get better. (the voice of experience.)

Thanks, V.O.E., info much appreciated. Now, considering I'm talking about inside pages with low rankings (very new), and each new page I add pops up with the same Google PR anyway, there's probably not much to lose. Does that make sense?

Serious optimization is done with an eye to two months in the future, and another eye looking further on, a year or two later. Immediate results are usually temporary. I always look at it as a long run proposition.
