Ive concentrated on Google for high search engine rankings, and have some #1 keywords. However, I've read about not putting all my eggs in one basket. Ive looked in other SE and directories, eg DOMZ, Alltheweb etc, but in most cases im listed but do not appear anywhere with my keywords like i do on google.

The question is, how do i gain a high ranking keyword on these other directories and SE, like i do on google.

Or do i need to pay for it?

thanks

Andrew,

You don't need to pay for all of the other engines and directories, but for alot of them you may have to pony up the cash.

Fast/AllTheWeb: You do not need to pay to rank in Fast. Optimize with the SEO basics, link pop, and an ODP listing to increase your rankings. Paid option available, but not necessary.

Lycos: Optimize for Fast/AllTheWeb....Lycos rankings will come. Free, although the paid option is available.

ODP: Free submission, although the inclusion time is sporadic and unreliable.

MSN: Optimize for Inktomi. Although INK requires a registration fee, many people, myself included, have had many pages and sites included for free.

HotBot: Get INK rankings....HotBot rankings will follow.

Yahoo: Have to pay the $299 registration for Yahoo, and you are at the mercy of the editor who will work with your title and description. Besides those factors, work on your Google ranking, PageRank, link pop, and click pop.

AltaVista: Not worth the submission fee. Optimize your pages, work on link pop, the submit through the Basic Submit option (free).

AOL: Optimize for Google....AOL results will follow. Free.

Everything agerhart said is on the mark. I only question one minor thing (and perhaps only because I misunderstood what he meant).

agerhart said: "Besides those factors, work on your Google ranking, PageRank, link pop, and click pop."

I am not aware that Google is tracking click popularity. Yahoo!, for example is. But I don't believe that Google is (at least on a widespread basis). I'm not sure if this is what agerhart meant to suggest. If so, I would like to know further details on this. Thanks.

Ultimately, this is probably a moot point, in any event, since any SEO that one does should be geared toward ranking on highly relevant keywords, and should involve the creation of good, click-worthy title and meta tags, and relevant body text. Where these conditions are met, click popularity will follow.

Lorraine,

In the above post, it says to work on click pop next to the Yahoo section, not Google. I didn't post any ranking or submission techniques for Google.

Yes, I believe you misunderstood - agerhart was referring to Yahoo not Google when he mentioned 'click pop'. <added - agerhart beat me to this one>

Trade links with other sites with the intention of trading traffic too - complimentary things can work wonders for this.

Even if the links never benefit you in any search engines, they can do wonders for your sites popularity among your target market...and it provides you with new sources of users.

In addition, if you trade links with other sites, and add those links to your pages, people might come back to your site again and again just for those links you added. So it gives surfers one more reason to love your widget site :)

Thanks agerhart for the clarification on the click popularity matter. My misunderstanding.
