What CAN/CAN'T spiders read/follow?

Am I correct that spiders cannot read Unicode? What about MS Character Maps ( &#9633 *white square*; •, ®, etc)?

Of course they follow HTML, but what else trips them up? Binary, ASCII?

Well, since most of the big engines support listings in alternative languages and character sets, it is a fair bet that they do support unicode to a degree.
