Feel free to pitch in, guys and gals. I'd like to end up with a compact thread, so I plan to edit out sidebar comments afterwards. update: some edits done --rcj

Thou Shalt Not.....
Repeat the keywords over and over again in the meta tags.

Use fonts with little or no contrast to the background color.

Use redirects.

Air !!!
Help !!!
<Thou Shalt Not.....

Submit URL's that have "?" question marks in them, or expect the spiders to follow links with "?" in them.>

Well, that's i'm gonna have to do soon as all our sites will have "?" in their URL.

<edit: no urls to your site, please -rcj>

So as i 'm a beginner (i started to learn perl but well...just a few days ago...) and till now only worked with sites that didn't have "?" in their URL, everything worked fine, i'll have to figure something to keep things work - this lovely little critters must creep on all my pages again.
Any ideas ???
10x :)

Thou shalt not... (update)
- submit urls with "?" in them to any other engines than Altavista and Google.
- expect any other spider than Googlebot to follow links with "?" in them.

If thou hast pages with dynamic content, then
Thou shalt...
make a script to turn all such dynamic pages into static pages every night, linking them to a menu, which in its turn is linked to the main page, so that spiders other than Googlebot can follow them.

Thou shalt also
remember to have a link back to the main page on all such dynamic pages turned static.

Well...
Excuse my ignorance but i need more precisions about this...
Is there a description somewhere on how to turn dynamic pages in static ones ?
I mean, it sounds that i have to change this pages all nights (do spiders come after night:)?) into static ones and everybody will see them as static OR is it a script that turns that pages in static ones when it detects a spider and only for him, that's it ? It seems more logical...I guess i sound like a complete dummy to ask this but, errr...no pain no gain, huh ?

Well, i guess i'll have to dig a little bit by myself before i ask some more précisions...
10x :)

Here is a link to a dynamic page:
[ruotsi.visitsweden.com...]
If you click this link, the page will be shown in your browser. If you then Click File/Save as... and give it a proper name, such as sweden-facts.html it will become a static HTML page. Basically, that is what the script should do, plus perhaps change some internal references if needed.

The reason why you may want to do this at night is that if you have a big site, the running of the script will not disturb other users. Spiders come whenever they feel like it. The script should be set up to run once every 24 hours, in order for the static files to reflect recent changes.

I am not aware of any description on how to do this, nor of any standard software, except a development package offered by Altavista, which they write about here:
[doc.altavista.com...]

Therefore, if you don't know how to write such a script:

Thou shalt...
...engage the services of a programmer. One way is to post a call for professional help in WebmasterWorld's commercial forum. There are many people here, who could do this for you for a reasonable amount of money.

Thou Shalt Not.....

create a web site then try to figure out how to promote it later.

Thou Shalt .....

keep in mind promotion of the web site WHILE thou is creating it.

>Setup a secondary email address to be used for SE submissions and linkage programs

Is this relevant at all? Why not?

martin, very relevant I think... unless you want to deal with constantly cleaning out your 'inbox' of confirmation emails, newsletter emails, requests for links emails, "I noticed you're not in these search engines" emails, at the cost of possibly missing an email from a customer or something you actually want to deal with urgently.

If they go to a separate address, you can deal with the important stuff first, then deal with this administrative stuff (which is 90% scan and delete) later.
