Ok,
I am getting so much mixed feed back from everyone I talk to about the "right" way to go for site submission. Is there a one shot way to cover all the bases to submit a site? I have neither the time nor money to research and buy dozens of maybe - hope - wait tools if there is one great one out there that does it all. Come on, I bet somebody knows the answer!

There are no "one shot" tools that will submit your website to all of the engines for a number of reasons:

1) Some of the search engines and directories require paid submission
2) Some of the search engines (AltaVista is a perfect example) have a set-up that doesn't allow for automatic submission

The search engines have also made it abundantly clear that they don't prefer automatic submission tools, as they have been abused time and time again.

Submit your webpages manually to the search engines and directories.

As a warning, any URL drops to Site Submission Tools in this thread will be deleted immediately.

There's also another factor -- several major engines (Google for example) prefer to find your pages on their own in the course of normal spidering. So in those cases, the best "submission" you can make is acquiring a few inbound links.

Some engines won't allow automated submission. Plus you will find a lot of tools will submit your site to FFA sites and you will have more spam than you ever imagined.

Submit your webpages manually to the search engines and directories

This is the best way to get it done. You really only need to get in a few. Most of the so called 500,000 engines won't give you a lick of traffic. Get in the majors and you should trickle down from there.

The other side of it is Tedsters advice. Get good inbound links and a lot of engines will get you in from there.

The best combination of tools: this thread [webmasterworld.com], and your keyboard and mouse.

One reason for the "mixed feedback" you encounter on this (and many) search engine related topics is due to how old the information is. Search engines change their preferences and policies more often then I like... Another reason is that people achieve different results depending on their approach.

After five years at this, I still haven't found a "magic bullet" that instantly takes a site to top rankings or massive traffic, doesn't mean I've stopped looking though... Seriously, I agree with all of that's been said already.

Let me suggest:
-Read and learn how to craft an ODP submission, this will give you a high quality link and get you into Google.
-Read and learn how to craft a Yahoo submission, then pay the $299 for it unless yours is a non-profit site. Another high quality link Google will appreciate.
-DON'T skip the "Read and learn" steps! Doing it right will pay huge dividends in the long run, doing it wrong usually leaves you with a mediocre listing (that's nearly impossible to change!) or no listing at all. If you don't have the time, hire a pro, it'll be worth it long term.
-Manually submit to Fast, Alta Vista, and Inktomi via Hotbot UK.

This will get you listed in +90% of the sources for free traffic.

SmarterKitty,

I have to agree with everything DaveatIFG says:
-Read and learn how to craft an ODP submission, this will give you a high quality link and get you into Google.
-Read and learn how to craft a Yahoo submission, then pay the $299 for it unless yours is a non-profit site. Another high quality link Google will appreciate.

-Manually submit to Fast, Alta Vista, and Inktomi via Hotbot UK.

I have been working on doing everything mentioned above and my site traffic has increased by almost 100%.
You should also take some time and go through this site. There is a tremendous amount of great information here!

Sigh, I am sure you are all correct. As you see, it's 2 AM and I am just getting to read my replys. I do like the webmaster site and it's extremely useful. Well, nothing is static (except my debts) and we can all hope that eventually the search engines will see that their best interests will be served by working together to create blanket submission standards - making our jobs 99% easier. I love working with the internet but its growing pains hit me in my time wallet. (I'm bring home the bacon, cooking it AND raising pigs on the side for more bacon) Oh well...it's never boring.
Thanks again, everyone, for the advice, and I never ask for it unless I am willing to listen.
