I figure that the secret to so doing will be to get some links coming to my site, and to add more content (it's coming! it's coming!).
I requested a link from a page which happens to mention SEOs. It's not a known directory or anything, but they were listed in Google, so I thought it was worth a shot.
They turned me down since I don't have a page rank and this doesn't look very good for clients - I agree...but how the hell do I get page rank if nobody wants to link to me? I have a colleague, the one who did the design for my site, who just got listed in Google; and she has agreed to provide a link to my site...but just hasn't gotten around to it.
Any suggestions? I will post to another forum to determine if Google has spidered my site based on logs... I have paid for inclusion with Inktomi. Tried Google Ads and Overture, but working in Canadian Dollars, your budget gets eaten up pretty quickly! I pulled those ads for now until I can add some more content and have a greater chance of converting customers.
I've really enjoyed learning here and think that I am pretty much doing this as a hobby.

Thankfully these links have worked out and I know work closely with the three replies to find good relevant links for each others sites.
So basically my advice would be to keep plugging away, more requests should mean at least somebody will get back to you. Secondly remember that your field appears to be a competative commercial field. Many people would not want to promote a potental rival. My strategy in this instance would be to do some work for a few selected people at competative rates. That way you could get them to link to you in a "Site Optimised by etc" kind of way. Perhaps also scour the web for other hobbyists to link to.
Remember I am no expert on this yet but with these sort of strategies outlined above I have yet to fail miserably in an optimisation attempts with one or two excellent results.
I also agree with shanz. Strategic use of link exchange could help boost your traffic and give you another inbound link. Links are great because they are usually targeted traffic.

Obtaining links is tough and very time consuming, and the best thing you can do to make this job easier on yourself is to develop more high quality content that people will want to link to.
Get inbound links - get afer your colleage. You can even use your personal web pages (which are easier to get listed - to provide links to your site). Personal web pages may have lower page rank and relevancy to your site, but might just get you indexed quicker....

the search engines like "information pages"
Do some research about something in your business area, write a few pages about this topic, giving users valuable information that they can use. (Best if you omit trying to directly sell your products in here too)
Valuable free information is great for the search engine and directory editors too.

Thanks to Scott Emick's suggestion to submit to Google, they finally crawled my site and my page rank bar is now white instead of grey *grin*
It may have sounded obvious, but I have been collecting tidbits of information for several months on this industry, and it all says that Google will find you...just get others to link to you.
Well I say BS :-) It has to be more than coincidence that my site has been up for months and when I finally click on [google.com...] that Google crawls my site ;-)
Now to start working on those inbound links...
