Hi all,

I'm back (at least temporarily) after a *long* hiatus. Perhaps someone could help me with some of the finer points of themes.

Lets say we have a pyramid like this, for a used car review service:

Top Level:
1)Cars/Automobiles (synonyms)
2)Reviews/Rating ( " )
3)Used/Preowned/Previously Owned

Mid Level:
1a) Ford
1b) GM
1c) Honda
1d) Chrysler/Daimler/DaimlerChrysler

Lowest Level:
1di) PT Cruiser
1dii) Neon
1diii) Pacifica

Now, I understand that themes means that we don't mix 1di and 1dii and 1diii on the same page.

But, can we mix synonms on the same page? Or do we need to have some pages say "Car Reviews" and some "Car Reports"?

And can we include higher level terms on the lower pages (ie, can we have "Car" on every page, or "Chrysler" on every appropriate page).

And can we mix higher level words, or do they need to be seperated also? That is, can we have a page with all the 1's, and a page with all the 2's.

Last, I understand that you can't link horizontally. What if the same midlevel word appears under two top level categories, can you link then?

I'd appreciate it if anyone who is kind and knowledgable enough to answer would also explain *why*.

Thanks in advance,
Franklin

Good questions and welcome back!

But, can we mix synonms on the same page? Or do we need to have some pages say "Car Reviews" and some "Car Reports"?

Yes, this is definitely feasible, as long as the content and links are in place to make this possible. Also, it is good to keep the different phrases very close in nature.

And can we include higher level terms on the lower pages (ie, can we have "Car" on every page, or "Chrysler" on every appropriate page).

Again, yes, this is good for the themed approach. If "car" is going to be your high level target keyword for the entire website, than it will help to reinforce that by having the keyword throughout the website. If one of the lower level pages targets "chrysler", then you could insert and target "chrysler car(s)".

When done correctly with the right keywords and keyword placement, it will allow you to pick up on a lot of secondary and tertiary keyword phrases.

And can we mix higher level words, or do they need to be seperated also? That is, can we have a page with all the 1's, and a page with all the 2's.

Yes....and no. I think that it depends on the content involved and the competitiveness of the keywords. I would be reluctant to mix high level keywords on the same page, as the end result may not be as successful. It is better to stay more targeted.

While this is true, the other point to be made is if you mix the high level keywords than you can end up with results from the 2, 3, and 4 word phrases, but this may mean less of the 1 keyword results.

Let's say two of your high level keywords are "car" and "reviews", or "car" and "trucks". If you target them alone, in my opinion, your chances increase for ranking under this term as the single word. If you have multiple high-level keywords on the same page(s) then you are opening the door to rankings for all sorts of multiple word searches.

It depends on the approach. On one hand you could have 1 top 5 ranking for the highly competitive keyword, and on the other hand you could have 100 top 5 rankings for the targeted keyword phrases.

Last, I understand that you can't link horizontally. What if the same midlevel word appears under two top level categories, can you link then?

While linking horizontally does not really follow the themed approach, I will link over to other sections when applicable, but I do this sparingly.
