I understand that books can not offer up to date content like a forum such as WebmasterWorld can but more and more I am running into people who are wanting to purchase books 'just to get a basic understanding'

eBooks are not a solution for these people. They like the doorstop style books.

My question is are there any books printed in 2002 for search engine placements, optimization and marketting materials? I say 2K2 because, atleast the data will kinda be updated.

I think that there is nothing better than this forum! This is the place where you can find THE SEO NEWS and the SEO history. And this forum is a "live" book: if you don't find an argument you can post your question.
In fact as a "Senior Member" (Rencke) says, this forum is the SEO University.

For beginner maybe a solution could be the eBook "The UnFair Advantage Book" from Planet Ocean; it is an eBook but it is not so upgraded as it should be.

I find interesting some books about usability, like the books written by Jakob Nielsen.

You can find some information at:

EliteWeb, I understand your situation. I just did a few searches and didn't come up with any thing new or up to date right off the bat.

As many have said, this is the type of industry where all of the knowledge and information is online, and the info that is offline is a bit out of date.

Haven't seen anything in 2002. The most recent I know of is the one by Marckini. It is a doorstop but by now contains so much outdated engine specifc information a client might not like it too much. It does however contain the basics of general SEO. HIs next book isn't going to be on SEO from what I heard.

Hello EliteWeb! I think traditional printed books for our industry are pretty much a waste of paper! The SEO landscape changes daily and unless that book comes in e-form, with weekly or even daily updates, its useless.

Unless of course the book is written around the core concepts of building a web site using today's technologies. There are still core concepts at work when it comes to optimization and those I think will never really change. I've always been a firm believer in Content is King. How that content is written is a great subject for an SEO book!
