What is the optimal way to "code" the title tag? Should the company name be listed on every page?

I don't put the company name in the beginning of the title tag, unless that is the focus keyword.

Using the company name on every page is only necessary in two cases:

- Serious branding is desired
- It is the main keyword

You should only mention your company name if your company is well known and will be searched for. What you should include in your TITLE is the primary keyword or keyphrase for that web page. The homepage/index page for the overall site should contain keywords/keyphrases that pertain to the overall theme of the site.

I try to have one principal kw phrase in mind for each page. That phrase plus perhaps one or two filler words is the optimal title, IMO.

Some times when things fall right I can get two kw phrases represented in the Title, but I don't force that. It's just serendipity when it works out.

It depends on where you are submiting, Looksmart and ODP seem to like company name in the title and are less likely to then mess with your description.

Though my ideal is Company name in title until I have looksmart, ODP and Yahoo then move to keyword phrase(s) in titles thereafter.

This is what I try to do, but I also like to include the name of the company, too. (I've found that some clients prefer this, also.)
Something like the this -

Apart from search... bookmarking is a consideration for me on the home page. If, and only if, the target phrases are not very competitive, I'll put the company name first in the home page title.

Another consideration is searcher click-through. The company name might help this, particularly where the url doesn't easily identify the company in serps that don't return meta descriptions.
