Is there anyway to prvent code theft other than cloaking.

I have achieved top five rankings on the major search engines, but now my competitors are stealing my code and body text. Is there a way to prevent this without cloaking?

there are probably people around here who could steal it, even with cloaking
:)

They probably would have more scruples than that though.

I would suggest that cloaking is the only way to go.

If you want people to download your site then they have to be able to download the code - it is fairly easy to get through any normal protection on the code.

Code compression will deter all but the most rigourous of copiers and may even help your SE ranking.

Code compression is where you take out all the spaces and just end up with strings of characters.

I was looking at this website [renegadenutrition.com...]
and cannot view the source code from IE. Any idea why?

ebgreen,

I have no problem viewing their code in IE 6 using both right-click and View on the tools bar.

No problem for me - right click was enough.

there are plenty of right click protector javascripts available. But these are easy to bypass.

>Dynamic Drive

Encrypting only works on IE5 (IE6? -probably).

Oh, and there's a script for breaking it.

It was said that some of the people on webmasterworld were capable of stealing cloaked pages???? How is this possible? Also, it seems that the Altavista submit url link is broken. Does anyone know about this or have an ubroken link?

The first poster says that his competitors are stealing his code and body text.

Your body text is copyright if it is original.

Get a letter off to them (solicitors / legal letter) or better yet if you have firm evidence that they stole your body text then use the resulting copyright dispute to promote your website in a non SE way, such as in PR (press releases and articles in your trade press)

Hey not so much of the loooong - I was one of the respondants in that thread and you're making me feel old! ;)

I originally got the 'body text' from the company whos' product I sell. I all I did was optimize it and now everyone is stealing it. I don't believe I can do anything about copywriting.
