Search Engine Optimization Advice

I am trying to optimize my website and am looking for information that will help me get started. Have a few questions:

How many times should my keyword appear in:

a)The Title (should my title only contain the keyword or can I include other text)?
b)The meta tag - Description and keywords?
c)Body of document?

Also, what is a good rule of thumb for the amount of words in the document (I heard it was approximately 500 words with the keyword showing up around 5 times?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I know that each engine uses a different algorithm...but I am looking at a starting point before optimizing for each search engine.

You have to include other text so that the SE's won't label it as spam. Also, you have to create the title tag so that the user will want to click on the link.

b)The meta tag - Description and keywords?

Although not of much importance....I would keep the use of target keywords to three times within the description and keywords tag, and as stated before, I would make sure that the description reads smoothly.......no keyword stuffing.

c)Body of document?

This is the prime spot to have the keywords. Check the keyword density of high ranking sites within your market. Target a KD of 5-15%

you need to count the keywords that show up in the title. url, meta-keywords and meta-description to your alogorithm.
