destroying post variable

Can you use unset to destroy a post variable?

For example:

unset($_POST['submit']);

The above code does not seem to be working.

Do you have register globals on? If so, have you tried:

unset($_POST['submit'],$submit);

Or try this:

unset($GLOBALS[_POST]["submit"]);

However I'm not sure if it will work. I found it under [php.net...]
