PHP Safe Mode

How necessary?

I am looking at adding a Shopping Cart to my website. I prefer one that is PHP based as that is the area I have most knowledge.

But two I have looked at so far require that PHP Safe Mode is turned off on the server. My current host says they won't turn it off so that gives me an initial problem.

I am very likely to sign up soon to a dedicated server so it is them my choice. But how necessary is Safe Mode. I have heard say that it is "overkill" and it is not a problem if it is turned off.

Can you guys please give me a bit more understanding what it does and how you think I should proceed.
