SQL - looking at x number of chars in a string

... as part of a query. Possible?

To make life really easy on a query, I'd like to only look at the first X (5 in this case) characters of a string field.

Is it possible? Something along the lines of:-

WHERE <first 5 characters of> `somedb`.`somefield` = 'trill'

I think you can use SUBSTRING(str,pos) , SUBSTRING(str FROM pos) , SUBSTRING(str,pos,len) , SUBSTRING(str FROM pos FOR len) [dev.mysql.com] (about half way down that page)
