Seriously, don't be put off by the word manual. The official site is by far the best online manual I've ever seen and it's as easy if not much easier than most other newbie resources you might find.

I've tried that manual and it seems to go from, "Hello World, this is my first PHP Web page," to much harder stuff...

i find that the manual is the best resource, i always have a browser window pointed at www.php.net open when i code, so i can do quick searches on all the functions and whatnot.
