php files being served with the incorrect mime type

I am trying to set up a development box, but I'm having trouble getting php working correctly.

Whenever I try to view a php file on the server using Firefox, it is offered for download. If I use IE, it displays it correctly. (Presumably IE is just guessing as to the type.)

I have tried it both with the latest version of Apache 1.3 and with IIS.
The problem occurs with both servers, so I'm wondering if there some php configuration problem that could be causing this.

You sound like you are on the right track. This recent thread that went on over in the Apache Forum might describe (near the end of the thread) what is happening to you...
